Storage units have many uses. They can be converted into workshops, garages, and even elaborate man-caves. But for many of us, they are the perfect place to store our “stuff” — the things cluttering up our homes, making our space too cramped.
One of the things you will need to do to make your storage unit the best fit for you is to learn how to optimize your storage. Here are a few tips and tricks to best utilize the space in your storage unit.
Create a Plan
Before you even start to bring anything to your unit, you need to have a plan for it. This is important because if you just throw stuff in and then try to organize it, you will find yourself with an unruly mess on your hands.
Instead, map out exactly what you want to use the space for and how you can best utilize it. If you plan to use this for just storage, you can sort your things into rows so you always know where to find them. You don’t want to just stack everything from the back forward because then you will have to climb over boxes if you plan to get anything from the rear of the unit.
Get Uniform Boxes
If you have a chance, make sure to get storage bins and containers that are all uniform size and shape. This way, they will be easier to stack on top of each other and you’ll maximize your space.
Don’t Overdo It
Many people think that to get the most out of their space, they have to stack the boxes all the way from floor to ceiling.
But what happens when you need something from a box on the bottom of a pile? You’re left tossing boxes around trying to get to the one you need! A good rule of thumb is to not stack anything over chest level, especially if the boxes are heavy.
Stack by Weight
While we are talking about heavy boxes, here’s another tip: don’t put heavy items on top of lighter items. As things settle, the heavy things are likely to crush and destroy your lighter stuff.
You can always write the contents of your storage bins directly on the bin itself, but we suggest a more hi-tech approach.
First, number each storage bin clearly on the outside, preferably on both sides of the bin.
Then, use an app such as Evernote or Quip to list what you have in each of the storage bins. That way, if you need something quickly, you can use the app to track it down. The best part is that if you’re only using a number, you can make it HUGE so you can find the right bin quickly, at a glance.
Utilize All The Space
You’ve probably got some things that you are never going to use, or are more likely to use very rarely.
In that case, look at getting ceiling mounted shelving for your unit. This would hang down from the ceiling and give you storage space up above. This is especially useful if you want to hang bikes or kayaks from the ceiling until you actually need them.
If you are tired of living in clutter, but can’t stand the thought of parting with some of your more cherished possessions, then a storage unit is a great option for you. By taking advantage of organization and space-saving tips, you can get the most out of these units and get the clutter out of your home.
